Handmade Paper Moulds For Sale from Griffen Mill
These paper moulds were made by specialist companies supplying traditional handmade paper moulds to the English paper mills in the early 20th C. It is difficult to date the moulds but we think they were probably made & used between 1900 & 1950. Nowadays one would expect to pay between £640 to £1000.00 for a traditional professional sized mould excluding the watermarks, tear wires or the extra cost of a divided deckle.
The mould & deckle construction is traditional, in the English style. English style moulds were considered superior because of the fine quality of craftsmanship exhibited in the joinery. The mould frames & deckles were made using West Indian Mahogany which makes them far less heavy to use than the New World mahogany used today.Professionally made paper moulds were made to make 100’s of sheets a day...every day...week in week out. Most of the moulds listed below however were used for special makings & therefore had lighter use.
However all moulds show some signs of wear & most will need minor repairs if put into use again. The main areas of damage are mentioned
Typical repairs are described at the end of the list & most need no specialist skills.
Please note we have no moulds in metric sizes such as A4.

COMMON REPAIRS.
Replacement of Rub Strips made from boxwood,on underside of mould.
These were tacked on to the bottom of the mould to protect the mould from damage when it was slid along the bridge & propped up on the ass. They were renewed regularly.
Renewal of Bracing Bars.
These wooden bars were attached to the underside of the mould to make it more rigid & add more protection to the ribs on the underside of the mould.
Copper & Brass Trim.
Damage to the metal trim is for some reason fairly common. In some cases the copper tacks have fallen out & in other instances the metal covering needs renewing. Brass or copper trimmed corners often show wear. Here the brass has cracked exposing the joint & the end of the rub strip has become loose.
Deckles
Damage can come from placing the deckle down to roughly on the bridge, splitting of the brass covering or loosening of the joints. New deckles can be made relatively easily by a skilled joiner but must be made to fit the face of the mould to give a neat deckle edge to the sheet & an even sheet profile.
